    Warnings and precautions:

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking fexofenadine tablets if you:

  • have problems with your liver or kidneys
  • are elderly
  • have heart problems, as fexofenadine, like other antihistamines may cause your heart to beat faster (tachycardia) or you feel your heart beating (palpitations).

If any of these apply to you, or if you are not sure, tell your doctor before taking this medication.

    Overdosage:

There is no clinical experience with a fexofenadine overdose. The maximum single dose tested in clinical trials is 800 mg in six healthy subjects. In a multiple-dose study, doses of 690 mg every 12 hours for 28.5 days were given to three healthy subjects and, in another study with forty subjects, a dose of 400 mg every 12 hours was given for 6.5 days. No clinically significant adverse events were reported in these studies.

In the case of an overdose, standard measures to remove any unabsorbed drug should be employed. Symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended. Haemodialysis is not an effectivemeans of removing fexofenadine from plasma.

Contact your local poisons information centre for advice on management of overdosage.

    Side effects, adverse reactions:

The most common adverse reactions of fexofenadine pills ( >= 2%) in subjects age 12 years and older were headache, back pain, dizziness, stomach discomfort, and pain in extremity. In subjects aged 6 to 11 years, cough, upper respiratory tract infection, pyrexia and otitis media were more frequently reported. In subjects aged 6 months to 5 years, vomiting, diarrhea, somnolence/fatigue and rhinorrhea were more frequently reported.

Provide the following information to patients and parents/caregivers of pediatric patients taking Telfast tablets, Allegra tablets, Allegra ODT or Allegra oral suspension:

  • Fexofenadine tablets, ODT or oral suspension are prescribed for the relief of symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis or for the relief of symptoms of chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). Instruct patients to take Allegra and Telfast only as prescribed. Do not exceed the recommended dose. If any untoward effects occur while taking this medication, discontinue use and consult a doctor.
  • Patients who are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients should not use these products.
  • Patients who are pregnant or nursing should use these products only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or nursing infant.
  • Advise patients and parents/caregivers of pediatric patients to store the medication in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry place, away from small children.
  • Advise patients and parents/caregivers not to take this medicine with fruit juices.

For Allegra and Telfast tablets: advise patients to take these tablets with water.
